What is Gynecology?

Gynecology is a specialty within healthcare that focuses on women's health, diseases that affect women, and the physiological function of the female reproductive system. As such, services range from birth control to robot-assisted surgery. Between those services are the diagnosis, treatment, and care for illness, injury, and disease. One of the most important functions of gynecology is that it serves as a resource for women who seek to know more about their health so that they can make informed decisions.

When Should I See A Gynecologist?

For the first visit, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggests that young women first see a gynecologist between the ages of 13-15. This is a time when girls can ask questions about development, sex, contraception, and gain understanding about how their body has changed or is changing. Typically, a pelvic exam is not required for teens and does not occur until age 21. However, if you have abnormal periods or experience severe pain during your period, then a pelvic exam may be necessary. A pelvic exam is a diagnostic tool that can help your doctor evaluate why you have abnormal periods or extreme pain.

Over the age of 21, it is recommended that women typically see their gynecologist every year for a well-woman exam. A well woman examination is an exam offered to women to review elements of their reproductive health. The exam includes a breast examination, a pelvic examination, and a pap smear but may also include other procedures. A gynecologist is a comprehensive resource for women who want to find professional information about products, conditions, and topics that affect their lives.

Why Do I Need A Pelvic Exam Every Year?

The pelvic region houses the reproductive system, digestive system, part of the nervous system, and many other features. A pelvic exam allows your doctor to screen for fibroids or STDs such as HPV or HIV. It also allows the doctor to address issues such as pain, irregular menstruation, pregnancy, birth control, and much more.

Do I Need a Pap Smear if I am Over 30?

The answer to that question depends on your health, the results of past pap smear tests, and family history. Typically, if your pap smears have been negative for the past five years, then your doctor may decide that you should have a pap smear every other year. You should still have an annual wellness exam each year.
