What is an IUD?

IUDs, also known as intrauterine devices, are small, T-shaped plastic devices that are inserted into the uterus and are safe and reliable long-term contraception options. IUDs are more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy in several ways which include:

• Thickening cervical mucus to prevent sperm from entering your uterus

• Inhibiting sperm from reaching or fertilizing your egg

• Thinning the lining of your uterus

How are IUDs inserted?

First, a speculum will be used to gently widen the vaginal wall. The IUD is then inserted through the cervical opening to the uterus. Most women experience mild cramping during insertion, but we recommend patients take a pain reliever prior to visit to minimize discomfort. Ultrasound guidance is used during placement and allows optimal insertion of IUD into the endometrial cavity. This reduces the risk of IUD malposition or perforation.

How often does an IUD need to be replaced?

This depends on the type of IUD. However, most IUDs can remain inserted from 5 to 12 years. They can be removed at any time during a routine office visit.

Are IUDs safe?

Yes, IUDs are very safe and are 99% effective, which has made them the popular choice for many women considering birth control. Serious complications from the device like perforation and ectopic pregnancy are very rare.
